The Church of Candlemas (Panagouda)

The Church of Candlemas (Panagouda)

The Church of Candlemas as we see it today was built in the 15th century on the foundation of two previous churches, the oldest of which was an early Christian three-aisled basilica with a narthex.
It still preserves important wall paintings of the 15th such as the painting of the Theotokos Platitera, the Annunciation and Saint Romanos and Simeon Stylites that adorn the alcove of the Sanctum. In 1706 the temple was adorned by new wall paintings distinct for their style; on the south wall there are the depictions of Candlemas, the Annunciation and the Nativity, on the north wall the depiction of the Pieta as well as on the west wall the depiction of Christ Elkomenos, the Crucifixion and the Assumption.
