Tombstone of a French Nurse – Macedonian Front

This is the tombstone of a French nurse who died for France. It is located in the old Jewish cemetery, across from the Barbuta neighborhood, in the Prometheus neighborhood.

Veria on the Macedonian Front 1916-1919

During the Macedonian Front, also known as the Thessaloniki Front (1915-1919) of the First World War (the Great War; Grande Guerre) (1914-1919), there was a significant presence of Greek and Allied forces in the city. From September 1916, Veria became a supply base and a center for the camping, preparation, and deployment of Greek and Allied troops towards the objectives of the broader Macedonian Front operations.
Two Greek divisions, two French divisions, a French regiment (comprising Indochinese, Moroccans, and Algerians), a Russian brigade, and a Serbian cavalry division were encamped in Veria.
The locations of their camps were:
• The Greek camp was in the old barracks, opposite the barracks (primarily housing Moroccan and Algerian troops),
• The French camp was opposite the barracks and at the current City Hall (formerly the old Hellenic Gymnasium of Veria), with the Indochinese stationed in the city, specifically in the old building donated by lawyer Kappos to the Municipality of Veria,
• The Russian camp was located to the east in Karsi Mahala and to the west in what later became the Prometheus settlement.

Military hospitals and dispensaries in Veria

• In the current City Hall (formerly the old Hellenic Gymnasium of Veria) and in other departments-annexes in various buildings of the city,
• In a building at the intersection of Miaouli and Irini streets,
• In the area near the Veria Railway Station.
